Sri Lanka's player Tillakaratne Dilshan has resigned as captain, Sri Lanka Cricket board (SLC) said on Monday, after the end of his team's tour to South Africa.

"Dilshan has resigned as Captain in all three formats of the game," a Sri Lanka Cricket release stated.

After being in the role for around 9 months, Dilshan gave the announcement of resignation in a press conference.

The captaincy was given to Tillakaratne Dilshan after Sri Lanka lost the World cup 2011 finals when Sangakkara was the then captain.

Dilshan led his team on tours to England, the UAE (against Pakistan) and South Africa and at home against Australia.

In the Captaincy of Dilshan Srilanka Played 11 Test Matches since May 2011, in which the team won only one and lost five Matches, Played 21 Test Matches in which the team won eight and lost thirteen Matches.

The loss in the Test series as well as the five-match ODI series against South Africa put him under added pressure.

Dilshan's batting stats became low in his captaincy carrer when compared to his non-captaincy career.

Sri Lanka Cricket board was expected to offer the captaincy to Mahela Jayawardene, who said he will take some time to think over it after the offer was made.

Mahela Jayawardene was appointed to lead the team for the upcoming tri series featuring Indian and hosts Australia starting from February.
